Dear Tip of the Weeker,
This week's Tip is about hosting a scavenger hunt so we thought we'd have one of our own to kick off our "newly remodeled" website...
SCAVENGER HUNT! Take a minute to explore our new website, submit the answers to our Scavenger Hunt and you’ll get immediate access to a FREE e-book, “Top 12 Marketing Tips,” a compilation of some of our favorite marketing tips from the WhizBang! Tip of the Week. Plus, the e-book includes an extra “baker’s dozen” bonus tip!
GRAND PRIZE! One lucky scavenger hunter (picked at random) will win 2 Tickets to the Retail Success Summit AND a private phone consultation with Bob!
Start the hunt by visiting our website, http://www.whizbangtraining.com.
Submit your answers & claim your free e-book at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WBT-Scavenger-Hunt
Here are your Scavenger Hunt questions:
- Which e-book will show you how to motivate your employees to sell more and keep them focused on selling every day of the week?
- What company does WhizBang! Training recommend for lowering your credit card fees?
- What association named Bob “Retailer of the Year?”
- What is the #3 reason to engage in eco-friendly retailing practices?
- What was the name of Bob’s first store?
- "Like" 5 pages on the website by clicking the Like button in the right columns.
- How many bonus gifts do you get when purchasing the Retail Mastery System?
- Which of Bob’s speaking programs will help you create a great frequent buyer program?
- What are the 3 ways retailers spend their time according to Bob in one of his retail training videos?
- Which past WhizBang! Tip of the Week talked about managing your store's reputation on Yelp?
Happy Hunting!

Scavenger hunts are a fun way to build camaraderie and a sense of community with your staff or with your customers.
Types of Scavenger Hunts
People often think of scavenger hunts as going around and collecting a bunch of objects, but there are other fun ways to create scavenger hunts. Here are just a few...
- Hide puzzle clues at different locations. Teams have to solve the puzzle at one location to find out where the next puzzle is hidden. (Think the reality TV show 'The Amazing Race')
- Give each team 10 different puzzles - the answer to each puzzle is a location and the team has to come back with a picture of the entire team at each of the locations.
- Create 10 tasks that a team has to accomplish (eg. serenade a gas station attendant, climb to the top of a light house, hug the mayor) and they have to bring back a video or a picture of them accomplishing that task.
Prizes
Mostly, people do a scavenger hunt just for the fun of it, BUT giving out prizes will add excitement to your event. Consider giving every person who successfully completes (or at least attempts to complete!) the hunt a small prize - perhaps a custom sticker, a cookie, an e-book, or a gift certificate to your store. And it's always fun to give away a big, grand prize - either at random or for the first team to finish. It makes the teams try harder and work faster!

Locations for Scavenger Hunts
There are lots of interesting places to hold your scavenger hunt:
- Around town - hide clues in your downtown or shopping area
- Outside - in a park or other outside area
- In one building - like a museum, the library, a ship, or your store
- On the web - for example, the scavenger hunt we have created for you!
Scavenger Hunts for Employees
Scavenger hunts are great for team-building or employee appreciation events. They foster communication, co-operation and competition. Here's what one employee, Marcia, had to say about a scavenger hunt she participated in...
“Melissa does great employee events. By far the best was a scavenger hunt.
We divided into teams and raced to find clues hidden around town. The answers filled out a puzzle that told us our final meeting point. Not only did we have to find facts to figure out the clues, we also had to sing for a clue and take group pictures and videos at some of the clues (we either used a long arm or found a passer by to help). We were all over the city, running, driving, cell phoning for help, searching the museum, etc.
I never laughed so hard nor learned so much about my co-workers and the town's history. We ended up at a local spot for bowling and pizza and shared our pictures with the other teams. The best of times!”
What a great energizer for that team!
Scavengers Hunts for Customers
There are lots of ways to design a scavenger hunt as a promotional event for your customers.
If your store is large enough, you could hide clues all around the inside of your store to get folks to explore everything you offer. This kind of hunt could be an on-going promotion (weekend or week long) and could work in the winter as well as the warmer months.
You could organize a big community wide hunt and have your customers end up back at your store for a party. You could even do a website scavenger hunt like we are doing! The options are many and the fun is endless...
If you’d like to do a scavenger hunt you can create it yourself from scratch, or use one of the companies that specialize in creating scavenger hunts. Even if you want to do-it-yourself, you should check out a few of the pros to see what kind of ideas they have.
Here are some we found on Google that look like interesting...
