Is that based on the strategy of higher perceived value, a display of confidence, or is it the latest economic stimulus package?

All of the above! What he points out is that most people don't buy on price, they buy it because they want it. I think this is true. We buy things because we want it and most of the time we don't even compare prices. How about you?
